Get Ready for Vermont Maple Open House Weekend

Will you be visiting the Vermont Maple Open House Weekend? This year the event takes place on April 2 and 3 and visitors will have the chance to visit Vermont sugarhouses and witness maple syrup being made.

Get Ready to Learn Loads from Vermont Maple Sugar Makers

Green Mountain Inn - Sap BucketsEvery sugarhouse is different and promises exciting experiences for visitors. Some will host pancake breakfasts while others will offer sleigh and wagon rides. You will even be able to snowshoe or ski through the woods at others or get the opportunity to taste delicious Sugar-on-Snow and talk to Vermont maple sugar makers about the exciting process of maple sugar production.

March and April are sugaring season and this is when the maple trees turn their stored starch back to sugar. The sap is then created as the tree mixes the sugar with ground water. It takes as many as 40 gallons of sap to make just one gallon of maple syrup. Sugaring season typically lasts between 4 to 6 weeks and a pattern of freezing and then thawing temperatures build up pressure in the trees which causes sap to flow from the tap holes. The sap is then drawn back to storage tanks at a central collection area or right at the sugarhouse with the help of a vacuum pump. From there it undergoes several different processes to become the delicious sweetness we know and love.
