It's time for the annual Stowe Mountain Derby.

Green Mountain Inn

Vermont is considered one of America's winter playgrounds, so it's no surprise that it happens to be the home of the original downhill cross-country ski race in the country. This year will mark the 71st Stowe Mountain Derby and once again, thousands of competitors and spectators will come from all over the globe for some good old winter racing fun.

Stowe Mountain Derby Race Track – 20km of Challenging Fun

On February 28, 2016, participants in the downhill ski race in Stowe will work their way through all kinds of terrain as they race from the peak of Mt. Mansfield to the finish line in the town below. Every year, all levels of skiers come to take on the challenge. Usually, the more experience an athlete has, the faster they complete the course, but everyone is welcome. Make sure you bring your A-game because the course drops over 2,600 feet and is pretty difficult.

The event will also include a 14km race called the Derby Fat Bike. Racers will ride their winter-equipped bicycles down the mountain in hopes of crossing the finish line first. For even more heart-pumping thrills, competitors can sign up for the Fat Meister, a competition that combines the times of ski racing and bike racing.

No matter what brings you to town, participating in the race or watching the competitors is sure to be a good time.

Winter Racing Outside, Warm Up Inside

We hope everyone in town for the cross country ski race in Stowe has a wonderful time. When your race is completed, or you need a break from watching the competitors out in the cold, we invite you to stop in at the Green Mountain Inn to warm up – we're located right by the finish line.
