3 Reasons To Experience Dog Sledding in Vermont This Winter

Often thought as a solely Alaskan pursuit, discover the magic of “mushing” with Eden Ethical Dog Sledding.

Dog sledding

There are a variety of winter activities to try when visiting the Green Mountain State! One of the least-known – dog sledding in Vermont –may actually provide you with the most unforgettable memories of your entire getaway! Many conjure up images of the famous Iditarod Race in Alaska, but Vermont dog sledding is just as memorable, if not more enjoyable.
One reason – Eden Ethical Dog Sledding, whose mission is to provide a happy home for retired race dogs while also teaching and enriching the lives of guests of all ages. If you are still unsure if a little winter dog sledding in Stowe is right for you, The Green Mountain Inn has 3 other reasons to come “mush” the day away:

Their Vermont Dog Sled Tours Are Fun and Educational!
Taking a tour with Eden is meant to be more than just a ride. You will enjoy learning about the sport of dog sledding, or “mushing”, and get to meet and bond with the dogs who’ll make up your team. These tours last from two to three hours due to their one-of-a-kind nature.

These Pups Are True Dog Sledding Champions in Stowe, VT!
It’s in their name, but Eden is one of the only free-range dog kennels in North America. Founder Jim Blair has experience on the dog sledding circuit, becoming an international race champion. His new team, “The UN-Chained Gang” includes over five generations of human/pack raised dogs.

Their Trails Are Second-To-None!
There’s a reason why mushers from all over New England and Canada come to practice on their privately built trails. Cutting through miles of the Vermont Wilderness, and with no snowmobiles in sight, you will be awe-struck by the beauty of the landscape around you!

After an afternoon of mushing in the snow, spend your evening relaxing at The Green Mountain Inn! With historic charm and modernly-appointed accommodations, we provide a comfortable home base for any winter activity in the Greater Stowe Area!

Get Ready to Hit The Slopes as the Stowe Derby is Almost Here!

If you are planning a Vermont ski getaway this winter, we suggest booking your trip sooner than later!

Stowe Derby

Stowe ranks as one of the top cross-country skiing destinations along the East Coast. One of the top reasons for this designation is the annual running of one of the oldest and winter ski events in Stowe, which also happens to be one of the most unique races in all of North America!

This year, on Sunday, January 13th, the Stowe Derby will return for its 74th year. Family friendly skiing in Stowe will be on full display with four different courses for the over 900 competitors to take part in. These four different pursuits are:

Long Course – Separate 20 kilometer races in both Classic and Freestyle
Short Course – designed for children ages 6 and up that doesn’t include the infamous 2,700 foot descent!
Meister – race in both the Classic and Freestyle Long Course
Fat Bike Course – 16 kilometers of cycling on the fresh powder

The course remains the same since this ski race in Stowe began all those years ago, as a personal challenge between a few famous visiting European mountaineers – race from the top of Vermont’s highest peak, Mt. Mansfield, to the historic town of Stowe below. The winners will clock in a little over 40 minutes, while those seeking to do some family friendly skiing Stowe may take a couple of hours.

After an afternoon in the snow, spend your evening relaxing in the traditional charm of The Green Mountain Inn. The classic ambiance and modern comfort of our accommodations provide the perfect home-away-from-home for any Vermont ski getaway!
