2019 saw the return. 2020 will see its unique skiing greatness truly take flight once again! For three years, the Stowe Derby was canceled due to severe weather conditions. After the third heartbreaking cancellation, organizers knew a change needed to be made. The Stowe Winter Derby is one of the oldest and unique ski races in all of North America and not having it for three straight years was a bitter pill for many in the Green Mountain State to swallow. In 2019, the race was pushed back further into the winter in Stowe and Mother Nature fully supported the effort. Mark your calendars and get ready to race on Sunday, February 23, 2020!

Beginning as a bet between two amazing skiers in 1945 – race from the top of the highest peak in Vermont to the historic Stowe village on one pair of skis – the Stowe Derby continues to attract hundreds of skilled competitors to Stowe, Vermont each year. Over the years, this winter fun in Vermont has added new aspects of the event. In addition to the tradition Long Course, the Derby now features a Fat Bike Race, a Derby Meister for those seeking an extra challenge, and the Short Course designed for children. Whether on skis or fat bike, the traditional course will take you over the hillside terrain of the mountain’s façade then wind you down to the scenic Recreational Path before finally crossing the finish line in the center of Stowe Village.

The historic Nordic pursuit of the Long Course is still the standard-bearer of the event. Descending the full 2,600 vertical feet, covering over 12 miles of downhill and cross-country track, the challenging race is always a memorable event and test for racers of all ages. The elite of the elite will finish the course close to 40 minutes from their descent while recreational skiers will spend upwards of a few hours on the slopes. Don’t let the air of competition fool you – this annual (fingers crossed) tradition is all for fun and fun for all in Stowe, Vermont!

The deadline to register for the race is Saturday, February 15, 2020. At that time, you will have to decide which Derby pursuit you wish to pursue. Start your Derby weekend off right by booking a room with us at The Green Mountain Inn. After racing down the highest peak in our entire state, Mt. Mansfield, you will need a warm and cozy home-away-from-home to return to. Nestled in the heart of downtown Stowe, we have everything you could desire to help you warm up, recharge, and celebrate your achievement in true Green Mountain style!
