The final vestiges of winter are upon us and soon the snow will begin to melt from our picturesque wooded wonderland. As the earth begins to dry and spring brings its slightly more mild temperatures to Stowe, Vermont, it signals the beginning of the sugaring season. During this time of the year, sugar makers begin to collect sap and boil it down until it thickens into the delicious Vermont maple syrup that we all know and love! Soon, it will be hard to find a restaurant in Stowe that does not include a little bit of maple sugar on its menu, as we take our syrup season quite seriously around these parts. Stowe Is Your East Coast Home for Spring Skiing and Snowboarding

All of the fun without the frigid temperatures – you can still ski Stowe throughout March and April!

Photo-1498146831523-fbe41acdc5ad

When you picture Stowe skiing and snowboarding, do wintry weather conditions on the slopes and being bundled up in so many layers you can hardly grasp your poles or stay upright on your board come to mind? Throughout the winter months, many skiers and boarders take to the multitude of resorts to get in some shredding on fresh powder and brave frigid temperatures and the wrath of Mother Nature to do so. Did you know that if you really want to ski and snowboard Stowe, the spring months of March and April might be the most ideal options.

Spring skiing and snowboarding are not offered in all areas of the East Coast. The milder temperatures can make it harder to keep the snow on the slopes. Yet for many places throughout Stowe, Vermont, this is a challenge that is readily accepted! The higher elevations of the peaks and a little expert snowmaking skills have made our skier’s paradise open for spring skiing and snowboarding through April.

One of the most popular spots to ski or snowboard Stowe in the warmer months is Stowe Mountain Resort. With state-of-the-art snowmaking capabilities that keep even their novice hill, Spruce Peak, open into the warmer months, along with the more difficult trails down Mount Mansfield (the highest peak in all of Vermont), you will not be disappointed! The variety of slopes that they keep open promise skiers and boarders of every skill level that they will be able to have fun in the great outdoors in Stowe! By the end of April, 80% of the snow may be manmade but that doesn’t make skiing it any less fun! Better yet, you will find discounts on lift tickets and rentals for equipment as it is considered the “off-season”!

For any of your Stowe outdoor pursuits, you will want a comfortable and convenient home base to return to after your day out in the snow (and sun) is done. Located in the heart of downtown Stowe, The Green Mountain Inn is just a quick eight-mile drive away from Stowe Mountain Resort. Be sure to check out our special offers to get even more value out of your trip!

Celebrate the Season of Carnival at the Mardi Gras Boogaloo

You don’t need to be in The Big Easy to throw a Mardi Gras Boogaloo!

Mardi Gras

Pre-Lenten (also known as Shrovetide) celebrations date back as far as the BC era. Yet in modern times, celebrating Carnival takes on a much more festive tone, culminating in one final party before the ritual fasting associated with the Lenten season. For all of us in Stowe, Vermont, Fat Tuesday is coming a little earlier this year when both Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Nathan and the Zydeco Cha-Chas hit the stage at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center for a Mardi Gras Boogaloo! In honor of this festive event, we are proud to announce that Mardi Gras in Stowe will commence on Wednesday, February 19 at 7:00 PM!

If you are not in Stowe, Mardi Gras falls on the calendar on Tuesday, February 25. But that doesn’t mean you are unable to start celebrating a week earlier. New Orleans, our country’s most renowned haven for Carnival celebrations, starts on the day of the Epiphany (January 6). And now, with the traditional Creole sounds and “musical gumbo” of the New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the Zydeco tinged jazz of Nathan and the Zydeco Cha-Chas, The Green Mountain State is getting a chance to catch up on the celebrating! The concert will bring a little bit of The Big Easy to Stowe in the winter. Tickets are on sale now for this powerhouse double-bill of Louisiana musical icons that is sure to be one of the top Stowe events at Spruce Peak all year!

If you are interested in celebrating the end of Shrovetide at the Mardi Gras Boogaloo 2020, don’t miss your chance to make it an unforgettable experience by booking a stay with us at The Green Mountain Inn. Conveniently located just a quick 8-mile drive from the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center, we will make you feel right at home with our comfortable accommodations, upscale amenities, and the most courteous service that can even rival the warmest Southern hospitality found in New Orleans! Our Old World charm may be more New England-inspired, but the good times will roll with us this winter in Stowe! Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Nordic Ski Our Winter Wonderland This February

Support Stowe Land Trust and make plans to join them for their special Nordic ski event this February.

Photo-1518775053278-5a569f0be353

There may truly be no winter wonderland quite like the one you will find in Stowe, Vermont. When you visit Stowe in the winter, it is hard not to get caught up in the quintessential charm of our historic Downtown. Yet we must admit that much of the winter fun in Stowe happens outdoors over the beautiful, oft snow-covered landscapes that make up our skier’s paradise. While there are always fun events and activities to enjoy during wintertime in Stowe, there are a few that help support the preservation of our amazing forest lands. One such event is hosted by the board members of the Stowe Land Trust (SLT), who are dedicated to conserving our area’s scenic landscape: Nordic Ski in Brownsville-Story Ridge Forest. It is a perfect chance for you to experience the beauty of the Green Mountain State for yourself.

On Saturday, February 15, 2020, Stowe Land Trust is sponsoring a Nordic ski in Stowe through the rolling hills of Brownsville-Story Ridge Forest. Please note that this is not a ski lesson, but a chance for any recreational skiers to take in the beautiful views from the Worcester Range and all across the valley to the Green Mountains. The route, however, is not set in stone (or should we say “snow”), as the current weather conditions along with the experience level of the group as a whole will decide where your skis will eventually take you.

The event is FREE and open to the public, but remember – you need to know how to Nordic ski to participate! You may be used to taking in your skiing in Stowe down the slopes, but that is not the skill set that is needed to join the group for this two-hour tour. Be sure to dress in warm layers and bring any provisions and extra clothing you think you will need. Also, you will need to supply your own backcountry Nordic skis, poles, and boots.

Are you looking forward to your Stowe skiing adventure? Start off on the right foot – or ski – by booking a room with us at The Green Mountain Inn. Conveniently located three miles away from the Brownsville-Story Ridge Forest, the starting point for the event, our comfortable accommodations and variety of amenities will ensure you have the perfect place to relax, recharge, and warm up after your morning in the snow.

With our beloved Green Mountain State having a variety of bodies of water, from lakes to rivers to streams, there are plenty of fish in the “sea” for everyone to take part.

Fishing in StoweWith virtually limitless possibilities, it can be overwhelming to start planning a Stowe Vermont fishing excursion. The Green Mountain Inn has a basic guide full of tips and tricks to get the most out of your day on the water.

To fish legally in Vermont, you will need a fishing license.

Depending upon your skill level, you’ll have a number of choices of location that each holds their own challenge.

Fishing season for most areas is restricted from mid-April to late October.

Weather conditions can vary so prepare with the appropriate gear (waders, comfortable clothes, rain gear, snacks, etc…).
